Booking Thursday - Fanfiction

A Weekly Meme Hosted by Booking Through Thursday

What do you think of fanfiction? In general—do you think it’s a fun thing or a trespass on an author/producer’s world? And of course, obviously specific authors have very firm and very differing opinions about this, yet it’s getting more popular and more mainstream all the time. Do you ever read or write it yourself?

Fanfiction is great. People know when going into it that it's not characters the writer has invented themselves - almost all fanfiction says this as the beginning, or is displayed on websites clearly stating what fanfiction is. If anything, I find it a flattering of the author - the fans love the stories and the characters so much they want to make short stories or poetry with scenes they can think of with their favorite characters.

I used to read Smallville related fanfiction all the time. I know that fanfiction like 50 shades of grey was different and considered inspired by Twilight (reading the books, I really don't get how). Almost all writing in the end can borrow off something, however.

So really fanfiction is creative and a good way for fans to get some of their expression and obsessions with stories out, especially together for fun. I don't see why an author should feel threatened - there are legal ramifications sometime people need to be careful with.

I have never written fanfiction myself, although I've thought of it sometimes when I was into the Smallville verse.
