“I gave him a smile. I was aiming for sweet, but he turned a shade paler and scooted a bit farther from me. Note to self: work more on sweet and less on psycho-killer.”
What a delightful book - without argument, my favorite of the series so far.
Genuinely hilarious (especially that ending, which had me chuckling for a few minutes AFTER closing the pages and putting the book down).
Story begins on a stronger note than the second and was easier to dive instantly into. Pleased as punch to claim it never lagged, never dulled, keeping a good balance of action (to stay interesting), with enough introspection (to keep it real). Premise good as it took the traditional pack relations and turned them upside down.
The Midnight Games were brutal and disturbing. Kate having to work with others to keep Curran in the dark, then the fights scenes with them together, were exciting and interesting. The ending packed a powerful punch of emotion from the Beast Lord and left me wondering what would be happening next.
Kate isn't my favorite urban fantasy character, she's a little too bitchy sometimes, but I still enjoy her books. Curran and her scenes together were riveting as before, twisting me between giggles and cheers. Their relationship is finally blooming further, and it's a great, steamy, funny thing. Andrea and Raphael are growing on me more and more as a couple and individually. Really you get a good does of all the major players in this one, Saiman included. What he turned into surprised me and was a sight to read. Derek is as intriguing as ever, although his story turns darker, gut-wrenching turn.
Let's just say Ilona Andrews is a master husband and wife team when it comes to pinning sexual tension. Curran practically causes the pages to start sizzling. We get to see another side of loyalty to the pack and his friends here. Every scene with him had me mesmerized.
What a delightful book - without argument my favorite of the series so far. Genuinely hilarious (especially that ending), all the characters stayed true to form and riveting, plenty of action and intrigue. There was pressure from multiple sides. The only thing I wish about this one is that I could give it more than five stars.
Book Quotes:
“Every time I think you’ve reached the limits of arrogance, you show me new heights. Truly, your egotism is like the Universe—ever expanding.”
“I think you’re confused as to the nature of our relationship. You and I, we don’t get along. You’re a psychopathic control freak. You order me around and I want to kill you. I’m a pigheaded insubordinate ass. I drive you mad and you want to strangle me.”
