Why I Love...Hate/Love Relationship

Why I love Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by the fun blog, Reflections of a Bookaholic. It's a mid-week meme focusing on something loved about books or bookish. I do a lot of memes already that are general questions, but some of these themes and prompts are a bit different so thought it looked fun!

Week's Theme: Characters I love to hate

Why I hate/love...Anita Blake

This was a hard one for me to do. I decided the theme wasn't favorite villains, but a likeable character kind of with flaws that you actually dislike?

I no longer read the Anita Blake series because I dislike the series changes. A lot. To me it's no longer the same series and all the characters left behind have become one-dimensional mockeries of their former selves. This is one reason I love to hate Anita Blake. But, I want to be more thorough for such a complex question. Even when I read the books in the series that I love (1-9), I still loved to hate Anita Blake.

She was a bad-ass character with an occasional glimpse of soft-hearted compassion. She was ballsy, good at what she did, and dimensional. The side characters were the best parts about the books, as well as the riveting plots and the  unique world Hamilton weaved together.

Still, even though I LOVED the books and read them about five times EACH, I couldn't stand Anita half the time. She was ridiculous stubborn, came across as too moody and downright rude to new people she met, was overly bitchy sometimes when it wasn't necessary, overly defensive, and sometimes the cockiness and smugness of her character rubbed me wrong in a big way. I also thought she was a bit too interfering into the choices of others at times when she didn't agree with them.

Still, in another way I really did like her. Above all that, I loved her stories to death. Well, before the later installments.
